Utilizing your Out of Network Insurance Benefit

When contacting your insurance company to find out more about your out of network coverage, ask these questions:

 1. Do I have out of network benefits for mental health services: individual therapy or couples counseling?
2. If I have this benefit, how many sessions are covered and is there an annual maximum?
3. What do I need to submit for reimbursement and is there a time frame for submission?

Benefits of not using insurance

At this time, I am out of network with insurance companies. Choosing not to use insurance in therapy can have advantages. Here are some potential benefits to not using insurance in therapy:

Privacy:

  • Insurance companies often require the therapist to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan for reimbursement. Opting out of insurance can help maintain greater confidentiality as your therapy details won't be shared with a third party.

Therapist Choice:

  • Without insurance constraints, you have the freedom to choose any therapist, regardless of whether they are in-network or out-of-network. This allows you to find a therapist who aligns with your needs and preferences.

No Diagnosis Requirement:

  • Insurance often requires a mental health diagnosis for coverage. Some people prefer not to receive a formal diagnosis, and paying out-of-pocket allows them to pursue therapy without this requirement.

No Session Limits or Preauthorization:

  • Insurance plans may require preauthorization for therapy sessions, and they may also impose limits on the number of sessions covered. Paying privately can eliminate these bureaucratic hurdles.

Medical Record Privacy:

  • Insurance claims become part of your medical record. Opting out of insurance can help prevent a record of mental health treatment that might be accessed by future employers or others.
